  • Horror Cinema: Appendage

I went into Appendage with an open mind, and I think that is the only way you can approach this movie. The strength of the movie was the main character, and her personal journey was enough to keep me watching from the get-go.

I am a fan of magical realism, notably writers Jeanette Winterson and Gabriel GarcΓa MΓ‘rquez, and Appendage was a creative contribution to the film genre, something we rarely see. The only other film classic I know of is Like Water for Chocolate, which is based on an equally amazing magical realism novel.

Appendage did a great job of manifesting the main character’s insecurities into the villain. As the narrative unfolded, the story attempted to make sense of the magical realism, which weakened the overall movie, to me, but did not ruin it. The movie ended on a very strong note that the villain was the protagonist’s subconscious, which confused me, and I think the movie would have been stronger without the epilogue. Either commit to the narrative reason for the magical metaphor or fully lean into the magical metaphor as an allegory.

Aside from that narrative contradiction, Appendage was really good, and I would recommend it for a movie night 🍿.

  • Horror Cinema: Phoenix Forgotten

Phoenix Forgotten was like The Blair Witch Project in that it was a story about a group of missing individuals told through found video. Where Phoenix Forgotten excelled was in its storytelling. Going into the movie, I had certain expectations based on the trailer that the story would be about an alien abduction. What I liked about the movie most was that it gave me exactly what I wanted from it. The twists and turns, and particularly the pacing of the story and of how the narrative unfolded, were well executed and made for an unexpectedly good movie.

The characters were sweet, endearing and believable, and the discovery of found video halfway through the narrative was an expert way to take the movie into a direction I did not think it could go, with an ending that was, to me, very satisfying. Highly recommended! πŸ‘½

  • 16th Century Alien Sighting?

    Basel Broadsheet, 1566

Residents of Basel, Switzerland experienced something in the sky at dawn on August 7, 1566. The image above is a representation – here’s a description from the Basel gazette:

At the time when the sun rose, one saw many large black balls which moved at high speed in the air towards the sun, then made half-turns, banging one against the others as if they were fighting a battle out a combat, a great number of them became red and igneous, thereafter they were consumed and died out.
